Week 8: Yun Ha Jeon

This is a picture of Postmodernism because it uses a famous old drawing and converts it to a drawing that people can relate to today. The original drawing in which this paining was based on was drawn by Salvador Dali in 1931 and was called The Persistence of Memory. Although the original drawing was drawn a long time ago, this similar drawing relates to our lives today. Currently there are many cartoon show that people daily watch. Some of these shows include, Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama, and Simpsons. The Simpsons first debuted in 1989, and it is still airing today. This show became popular due to the similarities that the show has to the current society of a typical family and lives.
In this drawing the author draws in a cartoon style. For instance, the author uses bright colors such as pink, red, orange, and yellow, and the author also draws in a nonrealistic manner. But in the original paining, Dali uses realistic colors and techniques. The author tries to convince the audience that we live in a time period in which we prefer cartoons/fantasy than reality. In this drawing, the author also uses the Simpson family characters instead of clocks in his drawing. This signifies the main thing that our lives currently view as a constant, like time. Unlike the original painting, in the background, there are pictures of daily items that our society currently uses like a donut, beer, and a balloon. The extra items that the author uses shows us how our society is different than before.

  1. I liked your post. I think the Simpson's version is an interesting twist on a very famous painting. Your interpretations of them are very cool.

  2. This piece of postmodern art definitely intrigued me while I was browsing the internet. It's fascinating how the artist uses the Simpson's cartoon to portray Salvador Dali's masterpiece. I agree that it symbolizes how our society sometimes focuses on animation and fantasy rather than reality.

  3. I feel like the Simpsons show is filled with post modern art anyway. I love how mysterious this piece of art looks. It's almost creepy.
