Post Modernism- Dominique Sykes

Post modernism has found its way at the forefront of the art world. Artists have found ways to express themselves without being one hundred percent original with their work; however, maybe it is original but just not what the normal culture of what art used to be. In the past, artist would have to develop an idea from scratch and bring their imaginations to life. Now, artist can still do that but they can also recreate an existing form of art and call it their own, post modern art; an example of this would be the picture of tomato cans that Mr. Emilio showed us in class.

I would like to reflect more on another type of post modern art which is body painting. Body art is an artistic movement that started sometime in the 1970s in which the physical presence of the artist, or a model, is regarded as an integral part of the work. A lot of artists are now days are choosing to express their imaginations and creativity through body art. The art gets very detailed and can include one to how ever many people the artist needs to create the complete canvas. We even see musicians using themselves as a canvas for body art in their music videos, an example of this would be Rihanna in her “Rude Boy” video or Lady Gaga in her “Applause” video. In the example I have we can see that the artist has definitely put a lot of time and effort, from head to toe of the model, into creating this body art so it should be considered art. Also, this type of work does take a lot of time and has a lot of detail. In addition, during the exhibits, or shows, the models have to stand in certain positions for very long period of time. So my question for body art artist is where is the longevity in this type of art? And is it still art if we just take a picture of it?
