Potential Topic for Essay #1

Briefly explain and summarize the ad you're considering and share why you’d like to write an essay on it. It’d be great if you can include a link/embed a video to the ad, so the rest of the class can see it. This is also a good opportunity to ask for feedback if you are on the fence between several ads. This post does not have to be as long as your normal posts, but should be at least several sentences. Due by Monday 9/5 at 4 p.m.

The ad that I chose titles "Imagine the Possibilities". This ad is relatively recent...concerning Barbies and I just found it randomly while doing my search. I really like this ad because there's a deep connotation to it. Therefore, I can write a whole lot about it. The Ad started out confusing and random... how there are kids teaching at the University level, being a vet, a soccer coach, and a historian. These kids confuse everybody and everyone thinks that it's a joke, but continues to play along. However; towards the end, the ad ended with the kid sitting in her own room, playing out these scenes with barbie dolls. There's a saying at the end that sums the whole ad up "when a girl plays with barbie, she can imagines everything she can become". This statement helps me realize how creative and imaginative kids can be. This ad is one of the few ads that stick out to me because there's a deep meaning I can elaborate on. Therefore, it would love to spend time writing about it. Also, there are a lot of technical techniques and denotation I can discuss analytically.

    "Hear What You Want"
Beats by Dre Featuring Colin Kaepernick

Official description: Focus is everything. Colin Kaepernick wears Beats by Dre Studio Wireless to stop the noise. Watch him silence haters in the full "Hear What You Want" director's cut by Paul Hunter.

I'm choosing this commercial because it has become prophetic in the life of a NFL Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, who plays for the San Francisco 49ers. When it aired, the context involved the the arrival of the sophomoric star quarterback into the stadium of the rival city (which would be Seattle, Washington). The hated quarterback is greeted by the jeers, boos, and insults of the rival fans; but he is able to focus on his game by putting on his "Beats" headphones which has an adjustable noise canceling feature that enables him to "silence" his haters and take in the lyrics of his music that he is indeed "The Man."

Since then, the commercial went into the archives, but has reappeared on Social Media due to Kaepernick's recent ongoing protest about police brutality at his football games. He has crossed a line between being a celebrity athlete and being vocal about social issues. So instead of facing hatred at the hands of the Seahawk fans, there is now a nationwide contempt towards him wherever he goes.

Here's a clip of his greeting by the San Diego Charger fans last week:

  3. I decided to choose a recent Nike commercial ad because of the variety and energy it brings to the viewer. The commercial is titled "Unlimited You" and features many different ages of athletes playing all kinds of sports. It contains many sound effects and the music is upbeat. The narrator contributes to the ad in a unique way, and keeps it very entertaining. The commercial is not only interesting to watch, it also is quite inspiring.

  4. I chose to do an ad of President Obama "The Choice" back in 2012. This is about an ad telling people why they should vote for him by using examples and pictures to show the audience more about him. I wanted to do an ad about this because the presidential election is coming up, and I wanted to see and learn what made Obama win based on the ad. I thought that this was unique because, these kinds of ads only come on the TV every 4 years when there is an election going on.

  5. I am deciding to do Always "#LikeAGirl" commercial. I think this ad as a good way of showing how stereotypes and other remarks such as like a girl, can really take down a girls self esteem. Since the norms for both woman and men are changing rapidly throughout the generations, I think this ad a strong message for girls who don't think they can do just anything and have to fit into the stereotypes that are given.

  6. I decided to cover Coca Cola's "Taste the Feeling" ad because it's a perfect example of the role products play in pop culture. At the beginning of the ad we see the names of the collaborating artists flash on the screen, followed by "Taste the Feeling" and "It feels good in my heart". Phrases like this are flashed on screen through the duration of the video along with images that capture the positive side of life. The ad's goal seems to be solidifying Coca Cola's place as a part of everyday, positive living for every person across the globe. The ad suggests that anywhere the product can be found is nothing but positivity and adding the product to any scenario automatically makes it better.

Tentatively, this is the ad that I'm using. It's an add for a cough drop brand, Ricola. The brand uses the "cough" as a double meaning, the first being that there a person has a cold, & the other meaning is undermining a woman's status to the person. I chose this as because it exemplifies how society views women and how the significance of relationships has dwindled down.

    1. Imani, that's an interesting ad, but you should be working with video advertisements (commercials), not print ads. Keep looking.

  9. The advertisement I have chosen to write my paper on is a Diet Pepsi commercial starring Sofia Vergara. The ad uses stars such as Sofia Vergara and David Beckham to make Pepsi seem like a highly desired drink. It's a funny memorable commercial that's short and to the point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B79RkBxSgU

"All women are naturally bad asses", says Alicia Keys. The Levi's commercial exploits the differences between women; their shapes, sizes, colors and everyday lifestyles. Although Levi's cater to both men and women, they use Alicia, a humanitarian, a role model for women empowerment as the face for the brand this time around. Recognizing all women are different, all women are important and I chose this specifically for that reason.

  12. The advertisement I chose was the State Farm Hooper’s commercial. This ad uses popular NBA players with accidents that could occur at your home or with your car. Most people can relate to having an accident at some point of their life. An having some popular NBA players makes it more relatable.

  13. I would like my analysis on the Dorito Ultrasound Commercial. Besides the advertisement being funny, it is very eye catching. I also think it is a very effective ad with all of its visual effects and the role of the dad ( the man being careless per usual).

  14. GEICO with your money! - Kanye
If you own a TV or computer, by now you have probably seen about how GEICO, the auto insurance company will soon start manufacturing its own brand of automobiles next spring. Starting with, you guessed it, the GEICO Gecko. A compact sedan marketed towards the "go gree"... Just kidding. I made (you look) it up. It might actually be a good promotional piece for them to offer a fake GEICO branded car in a TV ad to entice viewers into settling for their over-priced insurance once they realize that the sleek new whip is fictional.

From their slogan "15 minutes could save you 15% or more" (which by the way is A1 false advertising, considering my last price quote from them was 109% MORE expensive than what I currently pay at State Farm) to the English accented “gecko” (or Australian, there was a debate about whether he is British or Aussie when it came out [I apologize for the endless brackets, Mr. Emilio]) to the "Cavemen" ad series and eventual flop “Cavemen” TV show. The Government Employees Insurance Company has not only stood the test of time but has also been a MAJOR influence in the advertising arena as a whole. They have made TV advertisements even for car insurance companies a thing of pop culture.

My first essay will be dedicated to one of the many captivating GEICO TV advertisements. I will pick one as soon as I sift through the 30-minute compilation video.

  15. I accidentally happened upon the advertisement I chose today. Sure, I decided to look up the "funniest" and "best" commercials of recent years, but I didn't write all of them down as I watched. Then I realized something - I could only remember some of the commercials. If a commercial isn't memorable, then it isn't very effective in selling something. Why would I buy any service or thing that I immediately forget about when it isn't in front of me?

As I narrowed down the advertisements I remembered, I realized something else: many of the advertisements that were memorable associated other, previously successful 'things' (for lack of a better word) to validate their product. All but one commercial on my list contained a celebrity, a movie or tv show character, a tv trope, or another relevant element of society. The advertisement I decided on had all of the above, and while there were a few versions of it I decided on the full length commercial as I think it best exhibits the use of consumerism to sell products. Here it is, in all it's glory:

The advertisement that I chose was about Budweiser. This commercial constructed different emotions for the audiences. It started off by making the audience felt warmth and happiness when the puppy wanted to befriend the horse. Then we felt sympathy when the puppy was taken away, but then there were excitement and aw when the horses came to the rescue. However, if someone was to watch the commercial without knowing the title, they would be shocked by the ending.

The advertisement that I chose was KFC commercial. It focuses on the old america vs.the new america. It gives the viewer a home feeling you get associated with your grandmother. It values the significance of the "American Grandma and the American Dollar". It also displayed some competition among other competitors like subway, mcdonalds, it made reference to those commercial by having their food look bland and the KFC food full of vibrant colors and satisfaction from the buyer. It also besides showing the relationship between old vs new america it showed the mergence towards the end through popular culture

I am really happy that I stumbled upon the commercial I plan to analyse for the purposes of this essay. At it's core, this "tv ad" is part of the viral marketing campaign for an X-Men movie. As far as the content of the commercial itself, it is promoting the fictional school seen in the X-Men universe, Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. It combines many pop culture figures and ideas into one 60 second commercial, including super heroes, 80's nostalgia, and even a cameo from a certain comic-book guru. I already have a handful of ideas and topics floating around in my head for which direction I can take my essay, and I'm excited to uncover even more as I continue researching.

I've decided to analyze this commercial for the first essay of this class, for multiple reasons. Absurdist humor such as this is one of the easiest ways for any piece of media to become memorable, for one. On top of that, I feel as if this commercial (and the entire breadth of all Old Spice commercials that follow this same vein, for that matter) is ripe for picking apart how blatantly self-aware this ad campaign is when it comes to the absurdity of commercialized hypermasculinity.

I have decided this Dove soap commercial ad. The nature of this commercial fits well with our previous reading and I would say this commercial is geared towards the "populist" people in America. It portrays your "average everyday" girls from various backgrounds that don't have the "perfect hair", or what America has made seem beautiful and perfect. There are a lot of connotations in this ad that I would love to elaborate on in my essay.

  21. The commercial starts with four men robbing a bank. When they leave the bank with money in tow, their car can be seen being towed away. The four robbers then steal the closest car which is a Prius. Police chase them, and it becomes a phenomena police chase ,of said Prius and robbers. They are shown being chased on several news stations. The commercial ends with fans on the side of the road holding up signs encouraging them to continue driving. Id like to write an essay on this ad because Pruis' are known for being feminine cars. They're known for their great gas per mileage, and friendliness to the ecosystem. This commercial takes a look at that stereotype, and transforms it to have a masculine aspect, ie the police chase in the Prius. I enjoy how they're re-writing the view of a Prius.

My essay will analyze the Always Like A girl commercials. These commercials are made to not only try and break down the gender roles that are imposed on women since their youth but they are also trying to create positive change in the world while underhandedly promoting their brand. This strategy makes Americans feel as if it is their duty to help Always bring about a positive change in the world. My essay will focus on that and all other variables of these commercials.
