Pop Culture 101

Pop Culture the epitome of today’s society! What’s trending what’s not, who’s hot who’s not and all the other social buzz about our ever so popular celebrities and hashtags. Pop as one would likely associate with the music genre or even just a pop of color but today we are going to use it as the condensed version of popular. With social media and hashtags blazing it is so easy find out who is considered popular and who we choose to draw some of our aspirations from such as fashion, art, and lifestyles. With celebrities leading in the forefront  many millennials look up to them in some form or another and now, with social media we feel as though we have more insight into their lives, whether it be from a simple picture on Instagram seeing what they are doing or a post update on the ever so overrated Facebook. But what actually makes a person popular in today’s society? Could it be the number of likes on a picture or the amount of followers that one has? Could it be the number of Grammies and Academy Awards? Honestly one will never truly know but I figure that popularity is based on social preferences. One could be popular amongst one group and highly unpopular in another it all depends on a person’s preference on who they choose to idolize or engage or relate to in any way. This brings me to Culture. As described by Webster Culture is defined as “a social domain that emphasizes the practices, discourses, and material expressions, which, over time, express the continuities and discontinuities of social meaning of a life held in common." We as individuals grow up differently and embrace different cultural norms depending on our environment and social domain around us. Bringing me to my conclusion that Pop Culture is really what we choose to make it based on our own individual accords. Pop Culture for me consists of fashions such as Moschino, Ralph Lauren, H&M, and the thriving forever 21! Musical Playlists that consists of Gucci Mane, 2Pac, Biggie Keyshia Cole, Tory Lanez, Beyonce, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker just to name a few…. But that’s my personal take on pop Culture!
